Gerina took up golf for the first time at the age of fifteen. Gerina went to Goddard High School for her higher education in high school. She won at the New Mexico State Golf Tournament during her time in high school. Along with playing volleyball, she also competed at a state-level. 2003was the year she started her studies in the University of Texas. During the senior years of her career, she had won every tournament where she played. In her time at college she was awarded an award called the Conference USA Player of The Year Award as well as The UTEP Female Sport Athlete Award.
